Become a Volunteer
The Fairfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is always looking for new members to join our team. It takes a lot of manpower, dedication, teamwork, and a willingness to help others to provide Emergency Medical Services around the clock to the citizens of Fairfield and Rockbridge County. EMS is a unique and complex business and our members are well equipped and highly trained to respond to any type of emergency situation.
You do not need to have any training to join our team. You supply the desire to learn and we will supply the training. The basic training needed to function on our ambulances are CPR, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC). FVRS offers CPR classes that you can attend to satisfy this requirement. CPR endorsement should be at the 'Healthcare Provider' level. CPR is typically a one day class lasting from 4-6 hours. The local EMS council (CSEMS) holds several EMT courses around the district each year. Once you are a member, we will help get you registered for an EMT class. FVRS may cover the cost of the course, book, and testing fees. The EMT course usually runs about three months with class two days per week. There are day and night options for EMT classes and you can decide what fits best into your schedule. In order to drive an emergency vehicle in Virginia, you will need to complete EVOC. This is typically a three day course that includes two nights of classroom instruction and one day of hands on training. Once EMT / EVOC training is completed, you will be operating under an approved agency preceptor for the first few months. Once you have completed a probationary period, you will then transition into a released provider with Fairfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.
There are several types of membership offered within FVRS. Often times people are not sure how much time they will be able to commit when considering joining a rescue squad. Our Chief, Steve Reese can answer any questions you may have about finding a good balance between squad life and personal life. We understand that people are busy and have other obligations such as school, work, and family. We want to be flexible and are willing to work around schedules as much as possible.
Please click below to fill a application out online or download an application that can be faxed, mailed, emailed, or brought personally to the squad building. Also you may call the building at (540) 377-2848 and leave a detailed message with your contact information.
